Wen potatoes are ready to harvest...

Wenny from last years Advanced Diploma class is in residency on Barrack St. I was actually an early-bird and was in Wenny's Advanced Diploma ceramics class, as well as having shared a few other classes along the way. I am having trouble with wifi connection; so here's one of Wenny's photos from Facebook;

Susan's puppy visits

I briefly met Susan Flavell's old dog; "Dot" at The Artist's Dog exhibition opening.
 Unfortunately it since died. Susan brought in her new puppy to meet us in the TAFE studios.

Artist in Residency NMTAFE September 2016

I assisted Perdita Phillips with the Carry Me project. The intention was to visit up to 22 water bodies around central Perth and nearby parts of East, North and West Perth as a way of connecting up these scattered ecologies. Then the water samples were brought back to the North Metropolitan TAFE’s Artist in Residence space in Beaufort Street. Here we were able to combine different wetlands together so that they could be joined up as a single water body.

This is my unofficial film of my journey.

Artist Statement - Long Version

My new works examine past events and priorities in the context of an informed way forward. I am interested in what ways past works can inform and claim currency. Initially in focus was my attendance and participation in the 1988 Australia Day skateboarding competition at El Caballo Blanco in the Avon Valley. I imitated and re-issued my own T-shirt designs from this era. My digital video works focused on travels from the Swan Brewery, along Guildford road and extending up beyond Northam and into the night.
Artistic inquiry into Biblical verse both reveals and explores implied pathways through grain, texture and pattern. Clay became flawed in the potter's hand, so he remade it into another vessel that seemed appropriate to him. In my case raw simplicity resulted after frustrated efforts. Relevant to my experience as a visual artist is the metamorphosis of the overlooked.

A bottle as a vessel can carry a short note away but in a song by The Police; reply came by the same means. I found there were interweaving themes with reggae songs and some titles, groups and artist's names feature in my work. In many works stencilled font references the packaged nature of guidance, which is easy to store for future reference. This is not necessarily a good thing when time is of the essence and our time is in demand. Phrases removed from their context often take on a darker undertone, but through this line of inquiry a message may be found. It is my hope that printed materials that are overlaid, masked or cross processing with other mixed media unfold with unforeseen narrative.
